Correct Call: | Tripping. 1 minute personal foul. This one is nuanced. Because the defender’s check first lands on the shoulder and never contacts the stick, and then trips the player, this should be tripping. In real time, this particular scenario will be really hard to distinguish between legal and illegal.
For this to not be a penalty: | The initial check needs to get stick first. If he gets stick first, and the follow through ends up tripping the offensive player. No foul.
Game Level: | This should be called at all levels, but a case could be made to allow this on upper level games. |
Warding with slight separation
Correct Call: | Warding. Turnover, quick whistle. There is a slight separation gained, and the offensive player, is definitely pushing off with his free hand.
For this to not be a penalty: | Keep that free hand closer to the body, and not fully extending it.
Game Level: | This should be a ward at all levels. |
Contact on passer after the pass
Correct Call: | Unnecessary Roughness. 1 minute personal foul. While this hit happens from the rear, even if this was from the front or side it would be late and illegal. At the high school level this could also be a defenseless player penalty, where it would be a 2-3 minute non-releasable.
For this to not be a penalty: | Make contact from the front or side and before the passer gets rid of the ball.
Game Level: | On lower level games this should be a defenseless player, 2-3 minute non-releasable. For higher level games, the velocity is right on the border of warranting a defenseless player penalty. |
Deflecting shot with no stick
Correct Call: | Illegal Procedure. Playing without a stick. 30 seconds technical foul. The dark defenseman loses his stick and then engages in the play and blocks a shot.
For this to not be a penalty: | Once the player loses his stick, he needs to get out of the play without making contact with any player or the ball.
Game Level: | This should be called at all levels. |
Push before the goal
Correct Call: | Push from behind before the goal. Flag should be thrown. Goal is good. Flag wiped out because of the goal. If no goal was scored, the player in the crease kills the play. Dark team gets a 30 second man up.
For this to not be a penalty: | Avoid the contact from behind.
Game Level: | This should be called at every level. |
Hard check to the arm
Correct Call: | Slashing 1 min. Velocity is hard, location is on the upper arm.
For this to not be a penalty: | The check needs to get stick or be less strong.
Game Level: | This should be called at all levels. |
Tipped Pass
Correct Call: | The defense tip the ball and both referees make the tipping motion with their hands to communicate with their crew that the ball has been tipped. |
Feet still moving while pick is being set
Correct Call: | Moving pick. Turnover, quick whistle. The pick setter’s feet are clearly still moving when contact is made with the defenseman.
For this to not be a penalty: | The picker needs to have his feet set before contact, or avoid contact all together.
Game Level: | This should be called at all levels. |
High check into the helmet
Correct Call: | Slashing. By definition this is in the head/neck area and should be a 1-3 minute non-releasable penalty. This should land in the 1 minute area.
For this to not be a penalty: | If the defenseman’s stick was just up in the air and the offensive player ran into it, than this would not be a slash.
Game Level: | This should be called at all levels. |
Off ball d-man checks other guys arm on a pick
Correct Call: | Slash. 1 minute. The off ball defenseman slashes the arm of the ball carrier. While the velocity is not super strong, the location is in slash territory. This particular scenario has been a point of emphasis to discourage defenses to stop slashing the arm of the ball carrier on picks.
For this to not be a penalty: | The check needs to get stick and not the upper arm.
Game Level: | This should be called at all levels. |
